Full Moon behind the crater of Volcan Telica

Full Moon behind the crater of Volcan Telica

Description

The hike starts at Leon Downtown where we wait for our 4x4 truck that will take us to Hervideros San Jacinto. San Jacinto is a small community where we will first explore mudpots and then get ready for our 3-4 hours hike to Volcan Telica.

We will walk through farmlands and open fields for 3 hours and then we will hike the volcano for another hour. Once we reach our camping spot, we may take a nap for 30 minutes and leave our backpacks inside our camping tents before heading to the crater of Volcan Telica.

We walk around the crater of the volcano and then walk to our sunset spot where we may find a good rock to sit down, chill and enjoy the awesome view of Cordillera de Los Maribios. If we have time we may also explore a bat cave in the rear-side of the crater of Volcan Telica.

We then go back to our camping spot where will enjoy dinner and take a good rest. For anyone that still wants to go back the crater of Volcan Telica, we may go back to see lava and witness the Milky Way.

The next day we wake up at 4:00 AM and get ready to walk towards our sunrise spot where we will enjoy the sunrise and after that we will go back to our camping spot to prepare our backpacks. We will take a shortcut and walk for another 2-3 hours where our 4x4 truck will be waiting for us to go back Leon City.

We arrive at the Ranger Station located at the entrance of Parque Nacional Cerro Negro where we get ready for our hike. Don't forget to apply sunscreen and go to the rest-room for the last time.

The hike to Cerro Negro usually take between 30 to 45 minutes to reach its summit. We have plenty of time to explore its old and new crater before sliding through the slope of an active volcano. We may spend between 1 up to 2 hours in Cerro Negro before heading to Volcan El Hoyo.

Volcano Sand-Boarding in Cerro Negro is indeed awesome and unique but please be safe and pay attention to the instructions of your volcano trekking guide before riding your sandboard.

The trek to Volcan El Hoyo may take around 3-4 hours and we will walk through Las Pilas - El Hoyo volcanic complex. Once we arrive to Volcan El Hoyo, we will set-up our camping tents at the base camp and take a small rest. At 4:30PM we explore the big hole and then we trek to the highest point of Volcan El Hoyo to withness a sunset next to Cordillera Los Maribios. After that, we go back to the basecamp where we will have dinner and take a good rest. If the sky is clear enough then you may bring your sleeping bag and sleep on the grass to witness a sky full of stars and hopefully the milky way may show up in front of your eyes.

The next day we wake up at 4:30AM and walk to our best sunrise spot to witness the sunrise at the highest point of Volcan El Hoyo. If you feel tired, then you may stay inside your sleeping bag because sunrise can also be seen at the basecamp of Volcan El Hoyo. After that we have breakfast, prepare our backpacks and start trekking to Laguna del Tigre where we will take a good rest and swim for a while. Next, we get ready to walk to a small observatory deck where we will have lunch and enjoy the view of Laguna El Tigre (Tiger Lagoon). The end of our trek will lead us to La Paz Centro, a small community where our 4x4 truck will be waiting for us to go back to Leon Bus Station.

What can you do after the Hike?

I am pretty sure that after a 2-days hike, the thing you want to do is throw away your backpack, take a good shower and take a good rest BUT the best way to do it is at the beach. Yes, I was clear "the beach". There is a beach called Poneloya/Las Peñitas just 20 minutes away from Leon Downtown and we have the best spot for you. A small but peaceful house away from the noise of hostels and restaurants where you can sleep on a hammock, enjoy the waves of the beach, grab your camera and capture the sunset or wait for the stars and hopefully the milky way.

If you hike with Los Maribios and you want to stay at this place, please let us know in advance and we can help you to get a good discount in your stay here.
