Ometepe Hike - 4 Days-Hike

The trip starts at the bus station in Mercado Roberto Huembes in Managua at 6:00AM where we will get an express bus to Rivas. The bus ride usually takes 2 hours and 20 minutes so please try to find a good seat and enjoy the view or if you feel sleepy, then enjoy your small nap before arriving to Rivas. 

Once we arrive to Rivas, we will head to Puerto San Jorge where will take the ferry heading to Moyogalpa City. The ferry usually takes 1 hour and 10 minutes. 

We will take a small break in Moyogalpa City, have lunch together and introduce your 2nd tour guide for this hike. The hike starts at 2:00PM.

Volcan concepcion - 1, 610 meters (5, 282 feet) above sea level

We start the hike by trekking Volcan Cosiguina. We start our hike at 200 meters above sea level and we walk for 45 minutes to reach the base of Volcan Concepcion. After that, we start hiking for another 2-3 hours until we reach our basecamp which has an altitude of 1000 meters above sea level. We find a good spot where we will have snacks while we are waiting for the sunset and then we lay-down on the grass to look the stars and hopefully the milky way. 

After that, we walk back to our shelter to set-up our sleeping bags, campfire and have dinner together. For the people who wants to stay longer hanging out or enjoy a sky full of stars, feel free to do it. 

The next day we wake up at 5:00AM to get ready and hike to the crater of Volcan Concepcion. After that, it is time to go back to our shelter, prepare our backpacks and go back Moyogalpa City for our next hike.

Arrival Time to Moyogalpa City: 12:00PM (Next Day)

  6. Sleeping Bag (can be supplied if it is needed)

PUNTA JESUS MARIA + SAN RAMON WATERFALL

We will have lunch at Moyogalpa City and then we will head to our hostel to take a shower and take a good nap. We get ready at 4:00 PM and wait for our Tuck Tuck that will take us to Punta Jesus Maria.  DO NOT FORGET TO BRING YOUR SWIMSUIT

Punta Jesus Maria, a spit of land where you can walk up to 1 km and then turn around to enjoy the awesome panoramic view of Isla de Ometepe including both volcanoes. We have plenty of time to sit down, wear our swimsuit and swim for a while before we approach to our sunset spot. At 5:00PM we get ready and walk toward the front of the tip where we sit down and witness the colorful sunset.  After that, it is time to go back to Moyogalpa City and have dinner together. 

The next day we get ready at 8:00AM and wait for our private transportation that will take us to San Ramon Waterfall located in the southern slopes of Volcan Maderas. The trek starts in the biological station of a local farm where we pay our entrance fee and then we walk for around 2km through the plantation of this farm until we reach the farm's hydro-electric plant. After that, we continue trekking through a small trail along thick water tubes that connect the plant with the upper part of the river. The trek can take around 2 hours until we reach the waterfall where can take a shower in the waterfall and enjoy the awesome view inside the biological station. 

While everybody is having a great time inside the biological station next to the waterfall, your volcano trekking guides will prepare your lunch before your next hike to Volcan Maderas.

VOLCAN MADERAS - 1 ,394 METERS (4, 573 FEET) ABOVE SEA LEVEL

Now we start our trek to another local farm where we pay our entrance fee and get ready for our hike. Wood trekking poles are available at the starting point of this hike which are highly recommended. We start our hike and walk for 90 minutes until we reach the observatory deck where we will take a long break, witness the sunset and eat dinner. After that, we continue hiking until we reach a good spot to set-up our camping tents and sleeping bags, and then get ready to sleep. 

The next day we get ready to reach and explore the crater of Volcan Maderas. We found a good spot where we will have breakfast and take a good break. After that, we get ready and start our trek back to the starting point where we will wait for our private transportation that will take us to Moyogalpa where we will take our ferry and then go back to Managua.

NOTE: The hike to the top of the crater can be difficult, with steep inclines that get muddy when it rains. It rains often on Ometepe Island even in dry season so slippery climb is likely to happen. 

Difficulty: MODERATE - HARD
