An exploratory hike to Volcan Los Tacanites

What does the word Tacanites mean?

Hill at the foot of Volcán El Hoyo (León). Site to the south of La Gateada (Chontales). Region in the Sierras of Managua.

From tlacatl, cane; necuhtli, sweet or honey: “cane honey”; it is the name of a species of bee.
— Jaime Incer, Toponimias Indigenas de Nicaragua, 1985

How to get there by public transportation?

You can take a bus from either León City or Managua to La Paz Centro. At the entrance of La Paz Centro, you will find many caponeras (also known as moto-taxis) that can take you to Empalme Momotombo, where your hike awaits.

Caponeras typically charge C$100 córdobas for a single rider, but if you are with another person, the fare is C$80 córdobas per person.

Once you arrive at Empalme Momotombo, you can begin your hike. You can choose to either take the trail to Laguna del Tigre or the trail that borders Volcán Ajusco to make your way to Volcan Los Tacanites

Volcan Los Tacanites is a volcano located in Leon near Empalme Momotombo. This volcano has two summits and its tallest peak reaches an altitude of 485 meters above mean sea level. Los Tacatices is located between Volcan El Hoyo & Volcan Ajusco

Volcan Los Tacanites

This volcano does not have a camping area at its summit, nor does it have a well-marked trail for tourists, as it is not a volcano with much tourist publicity. Although the volcano is not very high in altitude, it presents difficulty due to its limited access to the summit, where one must find their own way to the top with a machete.

The small camping area we created to set up our tent.

Despite its low altitude and limited tourist publicity, Volcan Los Tacanites offers stunning views of the Los Maribios volcanic range. One can enjoy a beautiful sunrise with views of Lake Managua and the Momotombo and Momotombito volcanoes.

The route we took on our first exploratory hike to Volcán Tacanites involved navigating around Laguna del Tigre, then finding our way to the volcano along a trail that covered approximately 17 km from the starting point at Empalme Momotombo to the summit of the volcano.

Stay tuned for our upcoming exploratory hike to this incredible volcano!

Volcán Los Tacatices is a must-visit destination for anyone traveling to Nicaragua and looking for a hiking challenge.
