A new trail to Mogoton - The Highest Peak of Nicaragua

Cerro Mogoton - The Highest Peak of Nicaragua

Mogoton
The highest peak of the Dipilto mountain range, and the tallest in Nicaragua (2,107 meters).
Its name means ‘large mogote.’ A mogote is a hill crowned with trees. Dávila Bolaños derives the term from mo (massif) and cotl (trunk), meaning ‘large stem’ or ‘thick trunk.’
— Toponimias Indigenas de Nicaragua, 1985

Cerro Mogotón is located on the border between Nicaragua and Honduras, in the northern part of Nicaragua. With an elevation of 2,120 meters (6,955 feet) above sea level, it is the highest peak in the country. Several trails allow visitors to explore the natural beauty of Mogotón.

One of the most popular routes is a 12-kilometer trail that takes hikers to the summit. The trail begins at Finca Brisas de Mogotón, where local guides are available to help you reach the top. The farm owners also welcome visitors to stop by for a refreshing cup of coffee and to learn more about the history and significance of Mogotón.

At the summit, there is a small shelter where visitors often rest and enjoy lunch together. If you'd like to spend the night at the top, you're welcome to bring your own camping tent and sleeping bag. There is no additional fee for camping, so you can enjoy the experience without extra costs.
