A new 12km Trail around Laguna del Tigre
A 12km trail walking around the crater of Laguna del Tigre
Laguna de Asososca, also known as Laguna del Tigre, is located in Comunidad Momotombo, near Empalme Momotombo. It’s about a 90-minute bus ride from Managua.
This beautiful lagoon is part of the Ajusco Volcano (also called Cerro Asososca) and is a popular destination for tourists from León, Managua and Granada.
The Laguna del Tigre area offers a short 3km trail that runs from Empalme de Momotombo to the lagoon’s bay. This trail is suitable for all visitors, even those with no previous hiking experience. However, if you want to fully explore the crater of this lagoon, you can join us on our newest 12km trail.
Does a certified volcano guide is required for this hike?
If you choose to take the short 3 km trail to Laguna del Tigre, you are NOT required to hire a volcano guide for this hike. However, if you decide to take the longer trail to fully explore the entire crater of the lagoon in one day, we highly recommend contacting us for assistance with your hike.
How to get there by public transportation?
You can take a bus from either León City or Managua to La Paz Centro. At the entrance of La Paz Centro, you will find many caponeras (also known as moto-taxis) that can take you to Empalme Momotombo, where your hike awaits.
Caponeras typically charge C$100 córdobas for a single rider, but if you are with another person, the fare is C$80 córdobas per person.
Once you arrive at Empalme Momotombo, you can begin your hike. You can choose to either take the short trail or the longer trail to Laguna del Tigre.
If you're traveling to Nicaragua, Laguna del Tigre is definitely a must-see!
