Entrance Fee

There are several tour agencies in León & Chinandega that offer hiking packages for camping at Volcan Cosiguina for more than $70 dollars per tourist. However, if you choose to go on your own, you need to know that you DON’T need to pay neither Entrance Fee nor Camping Fee for this hike.

How to get there by public transportation?

The road from León Downtown to Cabo de Horno is about 105 kilometers, and you don’t need a 4x4 vehicle. You can take a bus from the bus station in León city  to the main bus station in Chinandega city. Once you arrive in Chinandega downtown, you’ll need to take a taxi to the El Mercadito bus station, where you can catch a bus to the town of Potosí. You need to get off the bus at Cabo Horno, which is the stop just before reaching Potosí.

Once you arrive in Cabo de Horno, you can begin your hike to the summit of Volcán Cosiguina. The road leading to the trail is accessible to motorcycles and small cars, in case you prefer driving instead of walking. You can park your vehicle at a grocery store located 2 km from the camping area.

Does a certified volcano guide is required for this hike?

For this hike, you DON’T need to hire a certified volcano tour guide, but we highly recommend not doing it alone. It’s best to go with a group of friends.

You can also download the trail online and use it on hiking apps like Strava, GPX Viewer, or similar.

A 2km trail exploring the beauty of Volcan Cosiguina

Volcán Cosiguina is located between Cabo de Horno town and  Potosí town in the Chinandega department, about a 5-hour drive from Managua. This hike is ideal for tourists with little or no previous hiking experience, and it is suitable for families, as even children can enjoy the adventure with their parents.

For this hike, you'll walk less than 1km to reach the campsite, where you'll find plenty of space to set up your tent and prepare your meals. It's always a great experience to enjoy camping with a hot cup of coffee and water for some instant ramen!

The trail from the campsite to the summit of Volcán Cosiguina is 400 meters long and usually takes 20 to 30 minutes to complete. Once at the summit, hikers are rewarded with stunning 360-degree views of Nicaragua, El Salvador, and Honduras.

From the summit, you can admire Volcán San Cristóbal, Volcán Moyotepe, and Volcán Chonco in Nicaragua; Volcán Conchagua, Volcán Conchaguita, and Volcán Chaparrastique in El Salvador; and Isla del Tigre in Honduras.

Volcán Cosiguina is definitely a must-visit for anyone traveling to Nicaragua.
